Virginia Peninsula Chamber announces Distinguished Citizen Award recipient
The 2011 Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award recipient has been announced by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.
Jean M. Yokum, the president and CEO of Langley Federal Credit Union, has been selected as this year's Distinguished Citizen Award recipient. She has been recognized for her contribution to improving the Peninsula region and for her outstanding leadership qualities.
The local business community has recognized Yokum over the years, and she has been been elected to boards for such organizations as: Virginia Air and Space Center; the Better Business Bureau, Peninsula Family Services, Inc.; and the Peninsula Retail Merchants Association. Named Outstanding Business Leader of the Year, Yokum also received the YWCA Tribute To Women In Business and Industry Award. In 2001, Yokum was recognized as one of the two outstanding professional women on the Peninsula by the Business Community of Hampton Roads.
Yokum will retire from LFCU next summer, after almost 60 years of service. In a press release about the award, Yokum is quoted as saying that "fifty-eight years might seem like a long time to some, but I enjoyed and appreciated every minute. For me, it has been 58 short years."
Yokum will be presented with the award at the 2011 Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting, which is being held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5 at the Marriott Newport News at City Center, located at 740 Town Center Drive.
