Portsmouth woman attending to flat tire struck by passing car on I-64

A Portsmouth woman was struck on Interstate 64 after a flat tire had forced her onto the shoulder Sunday afternoon.

Charisse Turner, 40, of the 4000 block of Reese Drive South, Portsmouth, was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital after the accident but died at the hospital.

According to a report, Virginia State Police responded at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday to the scene in the westbound lanes of I-64, just east of Northampton Boulevard. Turner had pulled her 1993 BMW onto the shoulder of the interstate after experiencing a flat tire, the report said. She was walking back to her car to get her purse after another motorist had stopped to help her when a third car ran off the road and struck Turner before sideswiping her car, the report said. The motorist assisting Turner was not injured.

The driver who struck Turner, Jonathan Heuneman, 47, of the 800 block of Norview Avenue, Norfolk, was charged with reckless driving. Police said that alcohol was not a factor.
