Jamestown's girls track team and Lafayette's boys track teams came through with championships at the Bay Rivers District track meet on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Jamestown sealed the deal with a strong performance in the 3200-meter run. Madison Kopfer took third and Haley Simonson placed fifth for the Lady Eagles as they racked up 105 points.
Tabb took second with 99.5 points and Grafton was third with 84.5 points.
Lafayette took control early in the field events and held on for the win.
Desmond Smallwood won the 55 and 300 for the Lafayette boys while Micahel Sonnek picked up wins in the 55 hurdles and triple jump.
"Our mentality is that anybody can get beat on any day," Smallwood stated in an email. "We're always ready."
The 1600 boys race was one of the most intense of the day, as Dawson Connell of York edged Kurtis Steck by .31 of a second.
The top six individuals and the top three relay teams will earn trips to the postseason. The Couggars are back in action when they compete in the Region I meet on Saturday, Feb.15 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
