Police investigate after suspect takes Ford Expedition with 4-year-old child inside

Police continue to search for the man accused of stealing a 1998 Ford Expedition from a Newport News woman while her 4-year-old daughter was still in the back seat.  

Police say a 19-year-old Newport News woman left her 4-year-old daughter in the vehicle on while dropping off items at a relative’s home just before midnight Wednesday, March 14.

While the woman stood at the front door of the home, in the 2000 block of Jamestown Avenue, an unknown thief took off with the SUV and the 4-year-old girl, according to a Hampton Police Division news release. 

Police stated they found the girl after 12:08 a.m. Thursday, March 15 when concerned citizens reported she had knocked on the door of a residence in the 200 block of Raleigh Avenue. 

Authorities returned the unharmed child to her mother at around 12:18 a.m. and the abandoned Expedition at 12:22 a.m. in the 100 block of Willoughby Place, according to the release.

The suspect is described as black. He had a goatee and wore a grey hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans during the incident.
