Police identify suspect in Hampton Police shooting investigation
Hampton Police have identified the suspect from a July 1 shooting.
Bryant Michael Weiford, 26, of Hampton, was killed during a shooting at 12:28 a.m. July 1 in the 100 block of West Pembroke Avenue. A Hampton police officer was traveling in the 100 block of West Pembroke Avenue when Weiford struck his patrol car with a baseball bat, according to a release from the police. A second officer arrived on the scene after which the two officers confronted Weiford.
The officers ordered Weiford to drop the baseball bat. Weiford then charged the officers with the baseball bat still in hand, according to the report. Both officers discharged their firearms striking the suspect.
Weiford was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation has determined Weiford was striking vehicles before the police officer arrived.
The two officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay per division policy.
A criminal and administrative investigation of the incident is ongoing.
