Hampton Roads sophomore heads to college
George Ward is a 10th-grade student at Hampton Roads Academy, but he is beginning his college career Saturday, Aug. 18.
That's the day Ward will join his peers at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., as a college freshman.
Ward earned his place at Bard College after completing his sophomore year at Hampton Roads Academy. The campus is home to more than 400 highly motivated students engaged in a rigorous college education at an early age. These students are on track to graduate from college one or two years ahead of most students, according to a school press release.
"Simon's Rock receives a number of impressive applications every year," said Steven Coleman, director of admissions, in the press release. "In a highly selective process, Ward's achievements stood out."
Bard College at Simon's Rock has been part of the early college movement for more than 40 years. It is the only residential college in the country designed to provide students an opportunity to begin college two years early. The school provides a liberal arts and sciences education.
